Open Data Day (http://opendataday.org/) is a global celebration of freely available data that can be used for the public good. In 2018, Victory Workspace brought ODD to Contra Costa County for the first time.  Let's do it again!  Register now to guarantee your spot, and please come before 9:00 to register! Join us at Victory Workspace in Downtown Walnut Creek for a day of civic hacking!  We will use publicly available data sets to analyze social problems and help local governments improve the quality of life in our communities. Who should attend? Web Developers, Public Servants, Students, Designers, and anyone who wants to learn how to code, is looking for employment opportunities, and/or would like to volunteer their time to help our local community. For experienced developers this is a great opportunity to give back to the community and meet other local technologists. For concerned citizens who don’t program, this is a good chance to learn about the force that has transformed the Bay Area over the last few decades and to see how it can be harnessed for the public good. Oh, and did we mention the free food being donated by our sponsors!? Before we start hacking, we will learn about open data from government officials and open source technologies from technical experts. We will discuss how open data can be used to improve our communities. Organizers will then describe projects we can work on; we will also give you the opportunity to “pitch” project ideas of your own. We will then form teams and start hacking. We will have ample free wi-fi and access to free software development tools. At the end of the day, teams will discuss their projects, give demos, and the winning team will receive a $250 gift card to the Apple Store! Help us visualize and interpret data from Walnut Creek’s permitting and entitlement process. Help create a central calendar of Walnut Creek events, including Arts & Rec, City and non-profit activities.   Contra Costa County Census Projects: Increase participation in the 2020 Census among undercounted communities by helping Contra Costa County develop a multilingual informational kiosk. Empower volunteers to help increase Census participation by creating an Adopt-a-Block system. Volunteers would electronically select a Census block to work on and then report back on their outreach efforts for that block.  

Civic Tech Toronto invites you to CodeAcrossTO - a civic hackathon where you can take on public challenges using data, design and development. No technical background is assumed nor required. _____________  CodeAcrossTO is a volunteer-run civic hackathon held each year on Open Data Day. We centre Toronto's community needs and bring together its talent across disciplines to seed solutions through design and technology. It's an all-ages, all-abilities event. Our format? Come for the challenges that speak explicitly to Toronto's sustainable future, facilitated by rad folks like Law & Design Colab (working to improve legal accessibility), OPIRG Toronto (environment/social justice research and action group), FreeGeek (educational and reusable tech, and Toronto Environment & Energy (driving Toronto's #TransformTO climate action plan forward). You will likely find CodeAcrossTO to be a non-traditional hackathon based on collaboration and deliberation. Do I need a team? How prepared should I be? You do not need a team! Come as you are, though of course we'd love for you to spread the word to friends. We encourage all participants to do two things: 1) maximise the number of strangers in your group, and 2) keep an open mind and try something new. Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? No. This will be an all-ages event though please note it is not designed specifically for children younger than high school. All minors must be accompanied by a guardian. What about food and refreshments? No one can hack on an empty stomach! We'll provide light breakfast, all-day coffee, and snacks throughout the day. Together with Get in the Ring, YES!Delft and Shell are looking for student teams, entrepreneurs or early stage startups to put their skills related to data science / AI algorithm/ developer skills etc. to practice and innovate the smart energy sector. Your challenge is to work on a business case to optimize energy consumption at Shell power plants, while maintaining a high and stable energy consumption by working with their provided dataset. Shell’s GameChanger program works with ambitious entrepreneurs who have the potential to impact the future of energy. Within a 5-day hackathon, you will get the opportunity to work on an actual business case with Shell’s dataset to validate and prove your insights in their data and present your solution to Shell’s jury at the end of the week.

Students and working professionals in Singapore! You're invited to participate in the Singapore Smart Nation Challenge (SSNC). Come in a team of 2 to 4 members and begin to brainstorm, conceptualize, and design a software product that aligns with one or more Smart Nation pillars--Digital Economy, Digital Government, Digital Society. There'll be optional courses if you don’t have coding or product development experience. Your design proposal may be one of 25 selected to be a Challenge finalist. The 1st Local Transport Ideathon Manchester 2019 is being held in of the Youth for Public Transport 2019 Global Hackathon. The winning project will travel to the international final of the 3rd Y4PT Global Transport Hackathon in Stockholm (Sweden) during the 63rd UITP Global Public Transport Summit in June 2019, one of the biggest events on sustainable transport in the world. Here they will challenge each other in a final round and have the possibility to be included among the best innovative transport solutions in the world. In 2017, over 1,000 people died from opioid overdosing in Virginia alone (including prescription opioids, fentanyl and heroin). A Virginia Department of Health report says that opioid-related deaths in Roanoke quadrupled between 2016 and 2017. Data stewards from health and other relevant agencies across the region will provide non-sensitive, de-identified data to this challenge for the teams to explore and use. Public and open data sets will also be used.
